WASHINGTON D.C. – The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Volunteer Council of the National Symphony Orchestra organized a special tour for the members of the ASEAN Spouses Circle (ASC) at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts – the nation’s premier cultural center – on 24 May 2023.
The tour began at the REACH which serves as the Center’s transformative new expansion, and offers multi-functional spaces and state of the art technology for its visitors, audiences, and artists. This was followed by a guided exploration of the Kennedy Center and its Opera House. The Opera House is home to the Washington National Opera and the second-largest theater in the Center.
Among the special guests in attendance were Datin Seri Haflin Nazri Aziz, spouse of Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz; and Ms. Htwe Hteik Tin Lwin, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
The group were also given the privilege to interact with some of the officials of the Kennedy Center such as: 1) Ms. Laurie McKay, Vice President of the Government Relations and Protocol; 2) Ms. Alicia Adams, Vice President for International Programming and Dance; 3) Ms. Jean Davidson, Executive Director of the National Symphony Orchestra; and 4) Ms. Jane White, President of the Volunteer Council for the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition, the group enjoyed a delectable variety of Filipino-inspired pastries such as calamansi shortbread, ube crinkle cookies, Malagos chocolate brownies, and Filipino Food for the Gods.
By an Act of Congress signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 23, 1964, the National Cultural Center was designated as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy to commemorate his devotion to the advancement of the performing arts in the United States. ###
