WASHINGTON D.C.The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. hosted government officials from the Local Government of Mandaluyong as they successfully concluded their leadership program titled “Innovation, Leadership, and Good Governance Program: A Learning Program for the City Government Officials and Practitioners of Public Administration of the City of Mandaluyong” held from October 01 to 06, 2023 in Washington D.C.

The training was organized by the Washington Global Institute (WGI), the Institute of Religion, Culture and Politics of Washington College, and the City Government of Mandaluyong in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government of the Philippines (DILG). It aims to equip government officials and public administration practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills required to actively perform their respective roles and responsibilities within local governance.

Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez highlighted the importance of good governance in his welcoming remarks. He said that ‘’We are confident that you will carry the invaluable insights and best practices you have gained through your program, and apply them effectively for the betterment of Mandaluyong and, indeed, the entirety of the Philippines. We need to bear in mind that the pursuit of good governance is not solely the responsibility of the government; it is a shared responsibility that each one of us must wholeheartedly embrace. May you leverage your position to inspire and influence the members of your local communities to become catalysts for positive change and  responsible citizens within our society.”

WGI President Dr. Tahir Shad and Maryland General Assembly Member, Delegate Sarah Wolek also graced the event.

“There are generations that came before us and there are generations that will come after us. And in that long arch of history, we have a small part to play but a really important one. It is to take this baton that was handed to us from our predecessors and take this journey that we’ve been handed with integrity, with passion, and with vision.” stated by Delegate Wolek during her keynote speech.

The event concluded with the conferment of program certificates and words of encouragement by Vice Mayor Carmelita A. Abalos: “As we return to our roles in city government and public administration, we will carry forward the lessons and insights gained from this program. Embrace innovation as a tool for solving problems and driving progress. Lead with purpose, empathy, and a commitment to the common good. Advocate for and implement good governance practices that foster trust and collaboration between government and citizens.” ###
