PH FOREIGN SERVICE POSTS IN THE U.S. TO CELEBRATE 122ND YEAR OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE VIRTUALLY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On 12 June 2020, the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., together with the Philippine Consulates General in Agana, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, and the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, will celebrate the 122nd year of Philippine Independence through a Facebook Live event featuring a simultaneous flag ceremony, special greetings and messages from Philippine and US government officials, and performances by Broadway Barkada’s Ester Barroso-Guerzon and Roy Flores.

The virtual celebration will also be highlighted by a video tribute to Filipino frontliners in the Philippines, the U.S., and Caribbean region, who have been working tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we reflect on the significance of this year’s celebration, it is equally important to recognize the various ways and opportunities by which we can rally our communities to support and uplift one another during this unprecedented time of crisis,” Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez stated in his message to the Filipino communities in the United States and Caribbean territories on the occasion of the 122nd Philippine Independence Day.

“Our Independence Day theme, ‘Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas’(Towards a Free, United, and  Safe Nation) calls on the indomitable Filipino spirit to once again rise up to the challenges that the whole world is facing today, and together contribute towards building a brighter future for the Filipino people,” the Ambassador further said.

On 7 June 2020, the Philippines will be celebrating National Migrant Workers Day, in recognition of the valuable contributions of overseas Filipino workers to the country. A three-part webinar series will be launched this month, through the joint efforts of the Embassy, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, and the Office of the Agriculture Attaché in Washington, D.C.

“The Philippine Embassy and the Consulates General in the United States remain open to serve, assist, and engage you as we continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic together, and transition to the new normal in the months to come,” Ambassador Romualdez said.
