RENUNCIATION OF PHILIPPINE CITIZENSHIP

OVERVIEW

You can voluntarily renounce your Philippine citizenship through the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC. Appointment and personal appearance at the Embassy are required for this service.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is the voluntary act of giving up your Philippine citizenship after acquiring foreign citizenship.

A Filipino citizen (natural-born or naturalized), at least 18 years of age, may choose to renounce their Philippine citizenship.

Filipinos who wish to renounce their Philippine citizenship must set an appointment to take their Oath of Renunciation. Once approved, the Embassy will issue a certification stating that the individual has relinquished their rights and privileges as a Filipino citizen.

Voluntary renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a permanent and irreversible legal action. Once you voluntarily give up your Philippine citizenship, you will no longer be able to reacquire it in the future.

Republic Act No. 9225 (Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act of 2003, commonly known as the Dual Citizenship Law) does not apply to individuals who voluntarily renounced their citizenship. The law only provides for the reacquisition of Philippine citizenship for natural-born Filipinos who lost their Philippine citizenship as a result of foreign naturalization, not through voluntary renunciation.
