WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Embassy of the Philippines and members of the diplomatic corps participated in the Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace Exhibition and Opening Reception in support of peace initiatives and women with Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark as guest of honor at the Woodrow Wilson House. Representing Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, Deputy Chief of Mission Felipe Cariño III attended the reception that inaugurated the exhibit on national costumes, including the Philippines.
The Philippine participation highlighted a striking Filipiniana (Baro’t Saya) ensemble titled “Where Shadow Gives Way to Bloom,” which was generously donated by the Honorable Senator Loren Legarda to the Philippine Embassy. The donation underscored her commitment to advancing Philippine heritage and promoting Filipino craftsmanship on the global stage.
Senator Legarda’s donation also reflected her long-standing advocacy for the preservation, promotion, and global recognition of Philippine textiles, traditional dress, and artisanal heritage. As a cultural champion, she has consistently supported initiatives that elevate Filipino craftsmanship on the international stage, making her contribution to the exhibition both timely and meaningful. With this piece, Senator Legarda reinforces the role and importance of fashion in communicating identity, history, and shared values across borders as a form of cultural diplomacy.
The Filipiniana piece features the traditional Terno Mestiza using pineapple fibers, cotton, silk, and intricate bead and sequin embellishments. Featuring a black mesh terno with a matching pañuelo adorned with pink floral appliqués, paired with a black cotton saya, the ensemble symbolizes resilience, renewal, and the enduring strength of the Filipino spirit. Through its interplay of shadow and bloom, the piece reflects the Philippines’ historical journey and its aspirations for peace and progress.
In addition to the garment, the Philippines was also featured through curated trivia and cultural insights, offering visitors a deeper appreciation of the country’s history, traditions, and the significance of Filipiniana attire within the broader narrative of fashion, power, and peace.
The Philippine Embassy expresses its sincere appreciation to Senator Legarda and the Woodrow Wilson House for the opportunity to participate in this meaningful international showcase.
The Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace exhibition will be open to the public until May 9. Tickets and additional information are available through the Woodrow Wilson House website. https://woodrowwilsonhouse.org/fashioning-power-fashioning-peace/
