WASHINGTON, D.C. – On 09 October 2025, the Philippine Embassy successfully held a virtual Town Hall on Dual Citizenship, engaging Filipino Americans in an informative discussion on the different paths to Philippine citizenship.
Consul Barbie Rosales explained the ways Filipino Americans can obtain dual citizenship. Those born in the Philippines who later became U.S. citizens will become dual citizens by reacquiring Philippine citizenship under RA 9225, while those born in the U.S. to Filipino parents must file a Report of Birth to claim Philippine citizenship.
Consul Rosales also tackled common myths and misconceptions surrounding dual citizenship and tested participants’ knowledge through interactive questions during the session. She also reiterated the Embassy’s advisory that there is no truth to several social media posts claiming that the U.S. government is no longer recognizing dual citizenship.
The town hall, live-streamed on Facebook, was made even more meaningful as it coincided with Filipino American History Month, a time to celebrate the enduring contributions, identity, and legacy of the Filipino community in the United States.
“The more Filipino Americans understand their citizenship options, the stronger their connection to their Filipino roots,” said Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez. “Hosting this town hall during Filipino American History Month made it even more special, as we celebrate both our shared history and continuing ties to the Philippines.”
