WASHINGTON D.C. – The Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines has successfully concluded their learning and exploratory program on smart cities titled “Building and Future-Proofing Cities of Tomorrow” held from January 20 to 27, 2024, in Maryland and Washington D.C. The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. congratulated the League and the organizers for the successful conduct of the program.
The training was organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government of the Philippines (DILG), in partnership with the Washington Global Institute, and led by the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines (VMLP)-National Capital Region (NCR). Its objective is to equip members of the League with the necessary skill set to implement smart city solutions within the context of a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world.
During the closing ceremony at the Philippine Embassy last January 26, Deputy Chief of Mission Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon, Jr. emphasized the importance of smart cities in the Philippines in addressing challenges brought about by rapid urbanization and population growth, such as traffic congestion, environmental sustainability, and disaster resilience. He highlighted that smart city initiatives address immediate challenges and position the Philippines for economic competitiveness, improved healthcare access, and enhanced governance.
“I look forward to updates and developments in your LGU. We are excited to hear from you to emphasize your communities as the next ‘go-to’ or ‘must-be’ place in our efforts to promote the Philippines to our American counterparts,” he said.
The Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. expressed its desire and readiness to support and collaborate with all partners, especially government colleagues, in advancing the initiatives discussed during this transformative program.##
