WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Philippine Embassy and its Defense Attache Office hosted a book presentation of Dauntless, an illuminating work by Marie Silva Vallejo that sheds light on the critical role of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments in the liberation of the Philippines in World War II.

Held in connection with the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) and the 75th anniversary of the PH-US Mutual Defense Treaty, the program underscored the Embassy’s continuing commitment to honor the legacy of Filipino veterans and to advance greater awareness of the Philippines’ contributions to World War II history.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez underscored that occasions such as this honor the courage and sacrifice of Filipino and American soldiers who stood side by side during World War II. He noted that these moments serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds forged in adversity and the shared history that continues to shape bilateral relations today, reflecting a partnership that has evolved from complex beginnings into one grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a steadfast commitment as equal partners.

In her presentation, Vallejo recounted her decade-long research journey, inspired by the discovery of her father’s involvement in a secret military unit, and narrated the bravery and strategic contributions of Filipino soldiers who undertook covert reconnaissance missions in support of Allied forces.

Attendees gained deeper insight into the courage and sacrifice of these soldiers, whose efforts were instrumental in the success of liberation operations yet remain untold and overlooked in historical accounts. The discussion moderated by Erwin Tiongson, DC amateur Filipino historian and tour guide, that followed provided a meaningful exchange on the importance of preserving, recognizing, and promoting these stories for future generations.

The Embassy extends its appreciation to Ms. Vallejo and all participants for making the event a meaningful tribute to Filipino valor and remembrance.
