The Philippine Embassy – in collaboration with the Embassy’s Office of Police Attache, EnJewel, and My Children’s House of Hope – featured an art exhibit entitled “Breaking the Silence” showcasing artworks created by survivors of child sexual exploitation and human trafficking in the Philippines. The exhibit was open to the public on November 16-17, 2023 and celebrates the “World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence” and the upcoming 18-day national campaign to End Violence Against Women in the Philippines.

During its opening ceremony, Deputy Chief of Mission Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon Jr. emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to preventing and eliminating sexual violence, protecting child victims, and prosecuting perpetrators. The exhibit aimed to raise awareness about violence against women and children.

Meanwhile, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Antonio Manuel R. Lagdameo, Sr. highlighted the importance of the UN declaration, calling for strong policies, justice mechanisms, and upholding every child’s right to a safe upbringing in a video message.

In their respective speeches, Ms. Naomi Estaris, Founder and President of EnJewel, and Pastor Joseph P. McGourn, Founder and Chairman of My Children’s House of Hope, underscored how the artworks became a tool for child survivors to tell their stories and serve as therapy in their journey towards healing.

Consul General Iric Cruz Arribas, in his closing remarks, urged the audience to reflect on the impact of the artworks and commit themselves to shaping a world where every child is safe. “Let’s be advocates for change and carry the lessons from this exhibit into our lives.” He expressed gratitude to all who joined the Philippine Embassy on this journey towards a safer and more compassionate world for all children.###
