WASHINGTON D.C. – As part of the Philippine Independence Day celebrations in Washington D.C. this June, the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC organized a special webinar entitled “Filipino Culture: Filling in the Void.” The event featured guest speaker Professor Felipe M. de Leon, Jr., former Chairman of the National Commission on Culture and Arts.
“Filipino Culture: Filling in the Void” sought to bridge the cultural gap felt by many Filipino Americans who have had limited exposure to their Philippine heritage, delving into diverse elements that define Filipino culture—history, traditions, arts, and values. This webinar aimed to reconnect first, second, and even third generation Filipino- Americans with the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
Professor de Leon brought a profound personal connection to the subject, not only through his extensive knowledge and passion for Filipino culture but also through his family’s legacy. His father, Felipe de Leon Sr., a National Artist for Music, composed the Filipino lyrics of the Philippine national anthem.
In his opening remarks, Consul General Iric Cruz Arribas said, “This webinar is a significant step towards bridging the cultural gap for many Filipino Americans. By understanding our history, traditions, and values, we can foster a stronger connection to our roots and instill a sense of pride in our heritage.”
Online participants were also joined by in-person attendees from the Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce of Metro DC and the Filipino Young Professionals of DC. All participants were encouraged to engage actively by asking questions and sharing their insights, making it a truly interactive and enriching experience. END
